01 — ABOUT THE PROJECT
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is one of the world's most prescribed diuretics for hypertension and edema. But leaflets are scary and TikToks are chaotic. We built hydrochlorothiazide247.video — a calm, cinematic, always-on library where every dose, interaction and lifestyle hack is explained in plain English with visuals.
Evidence-first. Every episode cites guidelines (AHA/ACC, ESC) and is reviewed by pharmacists. No miracle cures, only physiology.
Video-first learning. 3- to 9-minute episodes with 3D kidney animation, real BP cuff demos, food close-ups and subtitles.
For patients & caregivers. What to expect week 1-4, when to call doctor, how to track pressure at home, what to eat when potassium dips.
02 — MECHANISM IN 60 SECONDS
HCTZ blocks sodium reabsorption in distal tubules. More sodium + water leave in urine → less blood volume → vessels relax. Watch it beat by beat.
HCTZ inhibits NCC cotransporter. Daily diuresis increases ~300-500 ml at start, then stabilizes while pressure stays lower.
Episode 02Lower sodium in vessel walls reduces reactivity. After 2-4 weeks systolic drops 8-15 mmHg on average with lifestyle.
Episode 03Reduced preload + afterload = less hypertrophy risk, fewer edema episodes, better exercise tolerance.
03 — DOSAGE & SAFETY TABLE
Typical adult ranges. Your dose is personal — age, kidneys, potassium and other pills matter. Never adjust without clinician.
| Use case | Usual dose | When to take | Video lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hypertension start First-line, often with ACE/ARB | 12.5 – 25 mg once daily | Morning with water | ▶ Week 1 guide |
| Hypertension maintenance | 25 – 50 mg daily (max 50) | Morning, same time | ▶ Why more ≠ better |
| Edema / heart failure Only per cardiologist | 25 – 100 mg daily / intermittent | Morning, weight diary | ▶ Edema diary |
| Older adults / CKD | Start 12.5 mg, slow titration | Morning + electrolytes check | ▶ Potassium watch |
Evening doses = night trips to bathroom. If you miss a dose, skip — never double. See our missed-dose flowchart video.
Bananas, beans, spinach help, but labs decide. Muscle cramps, palpitations, weakness? Call doctor, don't self-supplement potassium.
HCTZ increases photosensitivity. SPF, hat, 1.5-2L water (unless restricted), less alcohol, monitor dizziness on standing.
